Dune Walk at Dusk

Oceano Dunes, Oceano, California

You scramble up a wind-sculpted dune in time to catch sunset, but it’s the sinuous shadows amid amber highlights that catch your attention. More than eighteen miles of sand stretch towards Point Sal on the horizon, and it’s easy to imagine getting lost in the stark lanscape. But as you acclimate to the view, you notice that even the smallest details take on dramatic flair. The lower the sun, the greater the spectacle. This is sunset among the Oceano Dunes.

What to expect

Unlike other treks, this route meanders with no fixed track. We’ll spend about half an hour walking to the taller dunes south of our starting point, then spread out in search of expansive sights and natural details. The only rule is to avoid walking where you want to photograph … unless you’re savvy enough to work footprints into your composition.

You’ll need to bring shoes you can afford to get dirty, because wading through ankle-deep sand is almost guaranteed. But there are also patches of relatively solid ground. That’s partly because the dunes are a combination of wind-borne beach sand from the west and sediment sand from the Santa Maria River.

From over the ocean, an isolated rain cloud, backlit by the sun, approaches cool blue sand dunes.
