Waves crash against stratified rock as golden-hour light illuminates an easy path. This is the Bluffs Walk, an accessible out-and-back path.
What to expect
Most of the walk follows a wide, gentle gravel path suitable for pedestrians, bikes, wheelchairs, and strollers. You'll barely notice the elevation gain as we walk from point to point, enjoying views of the ocean. We’ll make several stops where the path branches out to overlooks to observe stratified rock that’s tilted at sharp angles over three million years.
Common wildlife includes mule deer, white-tailed deer, king snakes, rattlesnakes, and mountain cottontail rabbits. Look out to sea for seasonal whales, orca, dolphins, sea lions, and otters. Birders should watch for hawks, gulls, and herons.
Photography conversations
Evening at the bluffs is a great chance to explore several concepts in photography and observation.
- How can we make foreground and background work together?
- What are different ways to frame a subject?
- How can we take clear portraits and selfies with harsh shadows?
- How do we adjust our camera settings as the light fades?
