Sunset Hike on a Lonely Hill

Islay Hill, San Luis Obispo, California

Sunlit vineyards stretch into the distance. The sun sets over picturesque San Luis Obispo. The trailhead is half an hour behind you, but the 360° views reward your effort. You’ve reached the summit of Islay Hill, an extinct cone volcano along the California Central Coast.

What to expect

Situated between the Irish Hills, Edna Valley, and the Santa Lucia foothills, this route delivers a lot for its short climb. You’ll walk over hard-packed dirt, often dusty in dry weather, and some granite outcrops that require shoes with good tread.

Islay Hill is an excellent vantage point from which to study shadows in landscape photography.

Weather permitting, you’ll see iconic Bishop Peak and Cerro San Luis, two of the adjacent morros, standing over the emerging lights of downtown San Luis Obispo. But as you crest the last ascent, the summit reveals one more secret: a unique art installation you have to see to believe.
